The University of South China is a university in city Hengyang, Hunan province, China. SMU was founded in October 1951 and notarized as one of the premier medical universities in 1978. The university was handed over to the local government of Guangdong Province and meanwhile renamed as University of South China. At present, SMU has become one of the 8 prestigious universities authorized by the Ministry of Education to run the pilot 8-year medical education program. It was formed in 2000 by the merger of Central South Institute of Technology (est. 1959) and Hengyang Medical College (est. 1958). The University of South China, with a nationwide enrolment, is administered by the Hunan Provincial Government, and co-funded by the Commission for Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense (COSTIND) and a few other ministries of the central government. SMU, located at the foot of the picturesque Baiyun Mountain in Guangzhou, has two campuses, the main campus and the Shunde campus, covering an area of nearly 1.68 million square meters, with a construction area of 0.845 million square meters. The university began its international student education in 2011, and there are now more than 50 students from 8 countries, most of them majoring in clinical medicine.
In October 2002, University of South China incorporated the Sixth Institute of National Nuclear Industry as its subordinating part and took over No. 415 Hospital (originally under the Corporation of National Nuclear Industry) as one of its affiliated hospitals. Nuclear science, medical science and environment-related sciences are the three pillarstones of the university. The University is home to over 2,500 faculty members, and over 37,000 full-time students, of whom 33,000 are undergraduates and 4000, master or doctor degree candidates. University of South China Climate
As far as climate is concerned, the temperatures in summer often reach an average high of 35 degrees Celsius with very high levels of humidity. The summer period for Changsha begins around mid-May and ends with August. Autumn comes to Changsha during September and ends in early November. The temperatures are still fairly warm within the city with an average range of between 15 degrees Celsius and 20 degrees Celsius..
